Jones & Cleary Roofing

Unparalleled Roofing Expertise

Over the course of a single year Chicago experiences perhaps some of the most drastic weather. Torrential rains can replace blazing heat in a matter of minutes and subarctic temperatures along with heavy snows blanket the city annually. For more than 98 years Jones & Cleary has helped protect the city’s vibrant network of warehouses and industrial complexes, skyscrapers, apartment buildings, universities, cathedrals, and historic landmarks with strong and reliable roofing systems.

Jones & Cleary applies their expertise to the installation and maintenance of these reliable roofing systems – offering an application that suits even the most unique architectural designs.

Built-up Asphalt (BUR) - The traditional roofing system with alternating layers of reinforcing felts and hot asphalt, a key advantage of the BUR system is the redundancy of layers in the waterproofing material. Once the desired number of layers is built up a flood coat of hot asphalt and gravel is applied as a protective barrier for a strong, resilient and durable roof covering.

Modified Bitumen (MB) – Similar to a BUR system, the MB system is composed of multiple layers of waterproofing plies manufactured by layering bitumen onto reinforcing mats of polyester or fiberglass. Polymers are added to the bitumen to increase the durability and longevity of the membrane. MB systems can be installed with a cold-applied adhesive, mopped down with hot asphalt or heat-welded in place, with various surfacing options including smooth, granulated and heat-reflective acrylic coatings. Beyond their long term dependability MB systems are the preferential choice of building owners and architects due to the flexibility in application and ease of maintenance and repair.

Materials used in MB systems include:

  • Atactic Polypropylene (APP) – a shapeless, rubbery compound that can be applied to a wide variety of roof styles.
  • Styrene-Butadiene Styrene (SBS) – provides good abrasion resistance and aging stability for resilience and longevity.

Single Ply - A popular choice for low-slope roofs due to their light weight, easy installation and heat reflective qualities, these membranes can be fully adhered, mechanically attached or ballasted in place. The three most common singly ply roofing materials are:

  • Thermo-Plastic Olephine (TPO) – a polymer/filler blend usually consisting of some fraction of synthetic materials, rubber, and reinforcing filler to provide flexibility both in use and application as well as strength.
  • Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) – perhaps the most widely known building product, PVC offers a reliable combination of durability and adaptability.
  • Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) – an extremely durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane.

Liquid Applied Roof Coatings

These systems are often used on green roofs and plaza decks. They generally consist of a two-part liquid (catalyst & resin) that is fully adhered to a prepared and primed substrate. Durability and longevity are improved by adding a reinforcing fleece or scrim to the membrane, which is seamless once the application is complete.

Cold applied liquid membranes can be integrated into a modified bitumen roof system and are a superior choice for odd-shaped roof penetration flashings. They may also be applied side to side. These sustainable roofing systems have low VOC emissions and efficiently reflect UV radiation.

Steep Slope Roofs

The roofs of historic and religious facilities often have very steep slopes. Experience and craftsmanship are of utmost concern on these projects, as details can be challenging and intricate. The appearance of the finished product is just as important as its function.
